What is FIX?
FIX is the acronym for Financial Information eXchange. The financial industry worldwide uses this open, non-proprietary, electronic communications protocol to standardize and streamline the real-time exchange of securities and trade-related information between parties. FIX is a global language for financial messaging and it specifies how trade orders, executions and other market data should be formatted and exchanged. It provides a universal “language” through messaging specifications, ensuring all participants interpret the same data consistently.
FIX means faster, more efficient, and transparent trading processes worldwide and it is designed for the rapid, real-time exchange of financial data. It is key to efficient and fast-paced securities markets. It is widely used by buy-side firms, sell-side firms, stockbrokers, dealers, banks, hedge funds and exchanges to communicate and manage pre-trade, trade, and post-trade information.
FIX is not tied to any single vendor. The protocol is supported by the active involvement of the FIX Trading Community, so that it works effectively across different systems and technologies and is neutral between vendors. It first started as a protocol for trading equities, but has evolved to support a big range of asset classes, including derivatives, fixed income, and foreign exchange.
